South Florida man gets 20 years for fatal DUI
A south Florida man, who ran to Belize after a DUI arrest and fatal accident, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Police say that James Baker, 67, was driving along I-95 in Boca Raton, FL in June 2008, when his car crashed head-on into an SUV carrying five people, one of the passengers died as a result of their injuries. At the time Baker was arrested for several DUI offenses.
An effective defense built by a South Florida DUI attorney can help a person avoid too much jail time if charged with intoxicated driving.
Baker was charged with one count of DUI manslaughter and was due to be sentenced last November, but he cut off his ankle monitor and fled to Belize. He was apprehended a month later and brought back to the states. Had Baker not ran, a Ft. Lauderdale DUI lawyer would have been able to get him more leniency from the court.
