Visitor Visas

Millions of foreign visitors travel to the United States each year for business and pleasure. They come as tourists or to visit family and friends. Others come for specific purposes, such as business, educational, or professional conferences, conventions, training, or consulting. Other foreign visitors come for diverse reasons; for example, medical treatment, volunteer programs conducted by charitable organizations, visiting ministers, or under certain conditions, as personal/domestic employees. Some foreign athletes and sports teams may come to the U.S. with visitor visas as well; however, most of these visitors need B-1/B-2 visitor visas to enter the United States.


Foreign visitors add greatly to our nation's cultural, education and economic life. A visa is permission to apply to enter the United States. Foreign citizens must apply for a visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad, when desiring to travel to the United States. A Consular Officer decides whether you are qualified for a visa. Citizens of certain countries may be able to travel without a visa on the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) if they meet certain conditions. They must be travelling to the U.S. for business or tourism for a period of not more than 90 days, have a round trip ticket, fly on limited air carriers and meet other requirements. The visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to a port-of-entry in the United States, such as an international airport, a seaport or at a land border crossing. At the port-of-entry, an officer of the Department of Homeland Security decides whether to allow you to enter and how long you can stay.
